How to insert a quote

Topics:

Tigerlily recently asked this question:

This may have already been covered, but is there a special way to insert a quote into your blog post?
Someone did answer this question already, but I can answer it again real quick: the easiest way I’ve found (not being super saavy with this wordpress thing) is to just use simple HTML. Insert the word “blockquote” in brackets like this <> at the beginning of the quote. At the end, insert “/blockquote” in the same type of brackets.

Formatting the Blog?

Topics:

Keeping up with the crowd and the recent conversation, I now have a theme to my blog! But the problem is this: now that I’ve changed the theme, I want to keep messing around with the formatting. I can’t seem to find anything else that I can change about the way the page looks, except for how many posts are visible per page. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Are there any changeable options I should know about? For example, Shady Waters says:

Just the other day I finally figured out what “Write Page” was and then went editing crazy. Not only that, when curiousity gets the better of you and you click on things you aren’t suppose to, since it is a test version its not quiet clear on how to get back to were you started. I clicked on a presentation theme option and next thing I knew, my blog didn’t make sense anymore.
What exactly is the “Write Page?” I’m not sure if I use it already or not.

In response to Cdigix

Topics:

Tigerlily said that she did not feel as though many students knew about Cdigix on campus and that it didn’t seem worth the hype. I was actually talked to CDigix about marketing them on campus this year, but they changed their focus. Right know they are focusing on their CLabs service at U of M. They are working together with faculty to better get media in classes to students. Right now, if a student wants to watch a movie which a class requires, they have to go to the UGLI or a library reserve and rent it. But through CLabs they have access through the internet to download it and use it on their comps.

Cdigix is not really getting their word out to students at U OF M as of yet. Other universities in which they’ve been a presence longer have a much larger number of students using their services. They are relatively cheaper. I think it is $10.00 a month to download movies and watch them and $2.99 to download unlimited songs. If you want to transfer the songs to an mp3 player or cd, you have to pay an additional fee. CDigix offers a legal way of obtaining media on campus. Before students downloaded illegally and would complain that this was because the university didn’t offer any alternative. By offering this service and collaborating with CDigix, the university is providing a legal way of downloading movies and music.

Whether or not CDigix will pick up is due to how well they market themselves on campus and if students are willin to pay for their service.

If you want more info, check out Michigan Daily’s article on CDigix.

Mat the way, ‘Mat your blog

Topics:

So Jb was asking about the write page function of the blog saying

What exactly is the “Write Page?” I’m not sure if I use it already or not.

Yes! You actually are already using it. When you go to your blogsite, and look on the right under “Pages” is the link labled “About”. When you click on it gives you info on what the pages is.

Pretty much they are just sub pages where you can put other information and stuff. You have other optoins like “custom fields” which I haven’t figured out but I think you just have to play with it a little, most stuff isn’t permenant. And if it is, we can talk to Bud ;)

It’s not really formating but its close.

If you go to the links tab in your dashboard, you can also add and delete, but I think most of us have figured that out already ;) It seems that this blog is a bit more stringent on the types of changes that one can actually make to the display of the blog. Rules, always getting in the way ;)

AIM: too impersonal?

Topics:

A friend recently told me that he doesn’t use AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) because it is too impersonal. I think the quick, impersonal nature of AIM is exactly the reason most of us college kids use it. Why waste your cell phone minutes when all you need to know is which pages you’re supposed to read for tomorrow’s class? Why try to call 8 people at once when you can just IM them all and let them know which bar to meet at? I don’t think AIM is supposed to be a substitute for face-to-face or phone conversations. If you think of it as a substitute, then yes, it is a very poor and impersonal substitute. I think AIM conversations fall into their own category: quick, easy and impersonal. That’s my opinion; I’d be interested to hear what others think.

Does anyone have an opinion on AIM in the workplace? My company had its own verson of instant messaging, but close to no one uses it, so I’m not really sure what I think about it.

AIM

Topics:

JB recently wrote a blog about how her friend thought AIM was too impersonal. I think that is the point of AIM. It will never subsititute face to face or phone conversations. I I agree that it is for quick messages, but sometimes AIM can get addictive and you end up spending more than just a “quick” moment at the computer. Because of this, I don’t think an AIM type chat should be installed at the workplace. It can serve as a distraction during work which may lower productivity. But this also depends on how well you get along with your co workers!

Fantasy Football has Changed Being a Football Fan

Topics:

Fantasy football is a way in which everyday fans can feel like they are more involved in the game.  Players sign up for a league either with friends or random people.  The league then has a draft in which each player picks players at different positions.  Then, each week, the teams of two players play head to head against each other, in each team competes based on points.  Points are awarded for reaching certain statistical benchmarks within a game.  For example, a team would get 5 points every time the Running Back ran for 20 yards.  Each teams points are totaled and the winner wins the competition.

What amazes me so much, is how much the American public has changed how they view sports.  Statistics were always considered important in determining certain players worth, but still within its larger context.  The best player was the one who could lead his team to victory and overcome adversity to help his teamates.  With Fantasy Football being as popular as it has become, players statistics are being treated as the only way for that player to have worth.  Many people discount what Tom Brady does, winning Super Bowls, because he does not rack up enough fantasy points through statistics.

This is bad for current fans, but way worse for young children growing up.  They are led to believe that individual performance, marked by statistics, is the supreme judge of an athlete.  Less people find the value leaders who win championships, which is the point of team sports in the first place.

However, fantasy football is a lot of fun and I have even started to do it this year.  It does make the season more exciting, but I think American fans are losing an accurate perspective on what really counts in team sports.  To play fantasy football check out, Yahoo Fantasy Football

Blogs Take Over the Nightly News

As we discuss every class, blogging has become a huge cultural phenomenon.  I just realized how central blogging is to advertising, when I checked out MSNC’s website to find a huge Blogging section.  Then, within the section, is Brian Williams of NBC’s Nightly News’ Blog.  Back before the takeover of the internet, there was much less personalizing with people on TV.  The newsman came into your home for 30 minutes or an hour and then left, not to be seen till tomorrow.  Now, you get to find out about his thoughts and feelings that he doesn’t express on the news, and a glimpse into who the actual person is, rather than just what he portrays on the news.  But then again, maybe Brian Williams is just using this blog for advertising himself and the network, and just writes what people want to hear or what will help the network.  So, I find it hard to realize someone’s genuine motivation who is blogging but is using it as an additional means of advertising.

AIM @ Work

Topics:

After reading zee’s blog along with jb’s blog I would agree that AIM is impersonal but at the same time I find easier to communicate through AIM. I find it easier to express something through AIM that I may have had difficulty doing in person. In a way it’s similiar to blogging. I thing Bud mentioned that one purpose of setting up our blogs was to have an impact on our in-class participation. Once we get comfortable communication via blogs, we would find it much easiers to express ourselves in class as well. Regarding AIM at work, I’m not really a fan of. Speaking off of personal experience I find AIM to be distracting when I’m trying to get work done. I have a  T-Mobile SideKick which is know for it’s special built in AIM feature, and I find that I have to disconnect from it during class because my buddies would constantly IM me while I’m trying to pay attention in class. So unless you’re working on a group project or something of that matter, I would say that AIM is more of a distraction than anything in the workplace.

More on Microsoft Visio

Topics:

After reading Kevin’s comments on MS Visio, I decided to join in too.

 Kevin posted:

Given that I’m most likely going back to work full-time at Microsoft next year, I had to throw in an endorsement for Microsoft Visio.  Microsoft Visio is a very good tool to document databases.  The program includes drawing shapes that can be used to define tables, fields, relationships, etc.  Visio provides database designers an easy way to map out the basic structure of a database.

I actually used MS Visio too for my summer internship. I think its a great program to make flow diagrams. It gives you several options to choose betweek block diagrams, 3-Ds etc. Moreover, its extremely user friendly, and easy to learn. I am actually surprised that we haven’t used it this far for any of our classes, given its excellent features. I definitely recommend it to anyone trying to make flow diagrams.

I personally think AIM is a big distraction when you are trying to do any constructive work. Most of my study time goes away taking “AIM Breaks”. At the work place, I feel AIM is very non-professional. During my summer internship, we had an internal chat network set up to talk with our teammated regarding work. It was highly monitored because of which participants kept it strictly professional. I think such a network is more useful at work.

Chat Intranet on Wall Street

Topics:

Continuing with the discussion on AIM @ Work, I was introduced to the Chat Program that many firms on the Wall Street share. Its like an intranet between different banks, and it is used for professional purpose only. It is very surprising that many people in these banks do not even know of its existence. It is not very popular or widely advertised, which is surprising to me! Being in a communication intensive team, I was introduced to it by my manager. But many others in the same bank did not even know of its existence. I thought it was very exciting to be able to connect with friends in other banks and people on Wall Street since programs like AIM or MSN were firewalled.

I wonder what the implications would be if most people in these banks started using it as a substitute for AIM for personal purpose? Did any of you use this program over summer?

Here are some questions I have regarding the use of unsecured wireless networks. I haven’t really researched on this ever, so I thought it might just make it easier for me to blog about it and learn from you all. (Moreover, it opens up another topic to blog about - YAY!)

  • If I use an unsecured wireless network, can the person who owns the network actually access my computer remotely?
  • Or can he access all the data that I am transmitting through his network?
  • Is it relatively easy for the owner to access my data or does he have to be a hard-core hacker?

Enterprise Instant Messaging

Topics:

Several recent blog entries (JB, Blogstar, Supriya) discuss the use of instant messaging in the workplace.  Several companies offer enterprise instant messaging (EIM) products, including Microsoft (Communicator 2005), Jabber, IBM (SameTime), Oracle, and Novell (Groupwise).  Interestingly, both AOL and Yahoo have been largely unsuccessful at introducing their own enterprise instant messaging clients.  The advantage of using EIM over traditional public IM is the ability to audit, encrypt, and log messages (especially important to ensure regulatory compliance).

I used Microsoft Office Communicator 2005 during my internship this summer.  In fact, the group I worked in was tasked with marketing this product to corporations.  The primary goal of EIM is to allow workers to collaborate better within the organization or outside the organization with business partners.

I am going to discuss a few of the features I thought were very cool and useful in a work environment:

  • Rich Presence – I could conveniently check whether my co-workers were available through the Communicator contact list, which was synched with Outlook’s calendar.

  • Integration with Telephony Infrastructure – With Communicator, I could initiate, accept, transfer, forward, divert calls, or even add other people to a phone conversation.  Whenever I received a phone call, a pop-up notified me of the incoming call and provided me with the identity of the caller.  Once in a call, my presence automatically changed to “on the phone.”

  • 1:1 Video and Voice communication

  • Federation – Communicator could communicate with other IM networks (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and ICQ).

Visio

Topics:

A few days ago JB asked:

If I were to map out (in a drawing of some sort) the information that will be included in my database, does Visio have the ability to turn it into entity types and such? In other words, can it do what we do in our BIT classes when we take our diagrams and turn them into tables?

Supriya followed up by saying:

I think it’s a great program to make flow diagrams. It gives you several options to choose between block diagrams, 3-Ds etc. Moreover, it’s extremely user friendly, and easy to learn. I am actually surprised that we haven’t used it this far for any of our classes, given its excellent features. I definitely recommend it to anyone trying to make flow diagrams.

Supriya summed up Visio well.  Visio is mainly for drawing layouts.  It only helps provide a map of how the database should be designed; it does not actually convert the diagram in to a database.

Google Bombing in Action

Topics:

Inspired by an article I read about Google bombing, I decided to write a short blurb about my web site, eMegaWeb.com (Web hosting), and of course link back to it :)   Help me out and do the same!

In October of 1999, I turned my attention toward the development of eMegaWeb.com, a web hosting company, which involves the leasing of server space and provision of internet services.  I could now have my own company without renting office space or incurring normal up-front costs.  Today, I have more than 120 customers, and as the business expands, economies of scale should result in ever-increasing profits.  The eMegaWeb experience has helped me identify business as a career interest, and has given me the opportunity to gain work experience and apply classroom learning at Michigan to the real world.  One benefit of running eMegaWeb is that it has allowed me to bypass country borders and interface globally with individuals.

Topics:

So Matt asked about origins of Opinionslug. Since I am the master and creator of it I can for sure define it? Or can I? The joy is that you’re all dealing with a marketing major, which means only one thing: I’ll pretty much personalize/creativize (yep I made up that word too) anything I’ll come across. To answer your question Matt, I just made that word up. It sounds kind of funky. Slug is actually a synonym for slowness and snails. So it all absolutely doesn’t make sense but people have taken to it and I’m happy. I hope you’ll tag with it as much as possible.

Technorati tracks from across the web, not just within the closed circle of this class. Further, Technorati applies an editing function to links. Some count more than others because those sites have more credibility. That can be a good and a bad thing. It somewhat enshrines the powerful and keeps them there. By another token, it helps keep down scam.

Well, it turns out the “Recent Posts” feature of WordPress uses technorati! So, they are the same! The advantage of using technorati in this case is that it will let you create a feed to track your blog which you can load on a page like start.com.

Google Bombing Business

Topics:

Just like everything else, changes in technology always make new business opportunities. The first of which is Google Bombing.  Personally, whenever I Google something I always select the first option presented (excluding ads) and I rarely ever go to the second or third page of the search results. Therefore, I think a possible business opportunity is a company which makes business more Googleable. Similarly, if I were a rival of Google (Microsoft) or looking to enter the search engine business. I would try to develop software or websites that would ruin or make Google less effective.
