Black Friday / Cyber Monday

Topics:

I have heard a few definition of why today (the Friday after Thanksgiving) is called “Black Friday”. This website I found is helpful. Basically there are a few reasons behind the name.

  1. The “black” in the name is a spoof of the term “black tuesday” of the 1929 stock market crash. Retail employess nicknamed the day this way because of how frightening and exhausting the day is. Most retailers will open very early.
  2. From the years when ledgers were kept by hand, in pen: referring to the black ink used to designate operating profits. This was supposed to be the day when retailers finally posted an operating profit for the year.

It is also interesting to learn that although Black Friday has the most customer traffic per year the most volumn per year is typically sold on the Saturday before Christmas or Christmas Eve. This link also discusses Cyber Monday.
