RSS - As we all work our ways through the final projects.

Topics:

This is a good resource for getting some background knowledge on RSS, and basic tutorials. It would be helpful to learn as we complete the final projects, and try to incorporate RSS for the extra points :)

The Tempo Quickens as the Templetes Diversify

Topics:

ahhhhhhhh! I’ve been trying to work on this chapter of SQL. And I was moving ok until the end of the chapter and I hit a wall with Attribute Value Templates and Working with Named Templates.

Ok first with Attribute Value Templates:

  1. What is an Xpath?
  2. What is the purpose of this template

Second with Named Templates, I understand that its creating another template rule so that one doesn’t need to rewrite it at every place you want to use it buuuuuuuuut:

  1. at the end of the example, why do they match year and grade?
  2. and why does my sample when I run it have an error message of:

file:/home/usr01/bit320/steviek/webapps/XSLT/basic.p63-2.xsl: XML-0121: (Fatal Error) End tag does not match start tag ‘xsl:template’.
file:/home/usr01/bit320/steviek/webapps/XSLT/basic.p63-2.xsl: XML-0210: (Fatal Error) Unexpected EOF.
Error occurred while parsing basic.p63-2.xsl: End tag does not match start tag ‘xsl:template’.

OK that’s it for right now ;D Over and Out!

Tolling your Bell, Curving your Waist

Topics:

Yeah so. Matt and Lily have been both expounding on the issues of bell curves. Tigerlily a really good point in that :

Also, I think the curve does not encourage group work because basically we have to fight for a spot in the ranking. It is not avoidable with the mandatory group work but besides that, I have no incentive to help someone else out.

It’s true! The bschool tells us all about group work all time. That once in the real world one, that’s all you do. Maybe but then what are they doing trying to get us to compete with each other, if they really want us to work together. It’s like MO said:

Rewarding B when hoping for A.

And lets all be honest here, this isn’t a problem. These are opinions. OPINION SLUG! ;)

Block your Way, Block your Quotes

Topics:

So Supriya was asking about blockquotes features, like this:

I am not able to block quote when I respond to others’ questions. I tried using the single as well as the double quotes but that does not work. It just shows up with the quotes rather than in the format which shows that I am responding to someone (with the line on the side).

It’s really easy ;)you have to do is click on “HTML” in your tools when you are writing. And when it pops up another screen, put infront of the quote “blockquote” enclosed in carrot things <>.At the end of the quote you then put “/blockquote” in carrot thingys <>. Sorry I can’t acutally can’t show you cause the writing editor is just too smart for me and thinks that I want to quote myself ;)

Actually, I just figured out that if you just type it into your write post viewer, it does it automotically for you. It’s just that smart.

That’s all you really have to do. There might be an easier way, but I don’t know. Life’s hard.

Islands of Communities

Topics:

Kevin happened to be disscusion blogs vs discussion forums saying:

Blogging feels less like a conversation and more like a one way communication stream. For instance, I would say that the bulk of the class posts are individual in nature. Discussion forums, on the other hand, promote more of a back and forth type of environment by grouping together similar topics and comments in the same thread.

And I have to say that I agree. But I think one thing to consider is the amount of effort the people in the community are willing to make to intereact with others. For disscusion forums, the community puts in a lot of time reading and keeping up with what others are saying. They also have very different reasons for interacting.
en though the structure we have is of little islands of themselves, I think that if we even put everyone in a forum that we would almost end up in the same situation because it does take a lot of time to to look down the long list of posts and figure out what to respond to in either case.

In this kind of situation, we have an incentive to post, but no incentive to interact highly.

Ho Ho Ho How to Search?

Topics:

So in class on thrusday we happend to cover how search engines search. Or we hypothosized. I happen to be reading a NY Times article about an alternative, when the algorithums, keywords, relevance, links, and arrows fail you.

One such solution is Google Answers, answering questions for people who have been let down by wonderful search engines that we use. Any sort of questions, doesn’t matter. You ask the questions, set the price you are willing to pay, $200 max, and wait for a willing expert to skim through the questions and select yours from the pot. The experts get a 75% commission for answering, researching, or find some sort of solution to your horribly difficult question.

Another option is Ingenio.com, where instead of asking questions. You pick a expert and send a query and await a call back. Each expert has per minute call rates and they will spend as much time as you need, and just charge you in the end.

And finally for the frugal, Wondir.com, is a no charge site, where anyone can respond, but people who answer can get tipped if they provide well and not only that they are able to enter contests to win cool things, like…tote bags…my personal favorite.

So here we have it. People trying to move past search engines and instead of organizing the web, we now just pay others to search through the mass for us. As always, remember to tip well.
