The Human Computer

Topics:

In Zeenah’s blog she talks about the Digital divide. She mentions that:

“We groan when we have to use a computer that uses dial up or if our phones don’t have a hands free device.”

From here she goes on to talk about expanding resources to the rest of the world. However, before I read the rest of her blog, I was reminded of an article I once read. that our need for faster computers, wider bandwith, etc… was not due to human greed; we don’t want more and more just to have more. The reality of the situation is that we ourselves have become faster; in essence we have been upgraded. It’s an interesting trend, especially among those that have grown up with computers, that over time they adapt to their new resources and actually begin to process information faster. Therefore, even though that webpage takes only a couple seconds to load, we feel as if it takes forever because we are ready for the next step. This brings up some fascinating concepts about human intellect and how the brain functions.  I’ll post a link to the article if I can find it again.
