Back to the Grind!
Topics: Technology education
Hi! So I’m back. Its been a long time. I missed and week and then it took me over a week to catch up on everything and start moving forward on my own. Catching up with classes is kind of hard, because there’s no one there to really explain the slides to you. It made me realize how much you need human interaction in education.
And so while I was willing the hours away when I should have been catching up last week, I had a strange daydream about education in the future. What would it be like? Where would the technology be used and how? Many people, when laptops came out were like, oh everyone’s going to have one in the classroom, but really everyone just only included the MBAs. So when will technology really apply and not? I thought of this scary idea: tape subliminals. Where you just fall asleep listening to it and the next morning you know everything….it would be so cool and easy.
But until then, I researched and found this one site called Campus Techology that does in depth articles on the current applications of technology to higher education. Check it out, between school

Could we apply this to the learning remix, and would it be useful? My cut is that things like mood analysis are good at large scale. At small scale, like in a classroom with under 100 students, you are better off directly engaging.

Learning Space Design Interview with Bill Dittoe
Might be worth a listen. I think the real issue is to get the informal aspect right. The web is an incredible archive, but by and large, really only semi-structured by search and the like. It requires a flexible approach for classroom integration.

Not entirely surprising, but still only a drop in the bucket of the total educational spend. Many aspects of education might be better accomplished online, particularly if any sort of archival material is involved. Does this include homegrown?

Technology vs Intelligence
Topics: LearningRemix Technology aggregation education interaction
I wanted to comment on the internet vs. intelligence issue brought up in this posting. I dont know if I would say the internet is making us dumber but we are surely dependent on our technology. For instance, during the blackout, most of our normal daily procedures were called to a halt and many businesses couldn’t function. Technology does discourage the use of the traditional paper and pencil mathematics, but wherever there is expansion of communication, there is more information and therefore more knowledge.

So, is the BIT320 remix making us smarter or dumber? According to this slashdot post, we may be in trouble for traditional learning purposes. I suspect there is an issue in getting people to adopt this kind of novel style also.
