CD: change directory issue

Topics:

I just have a quick question regarding the simple cd command. When I first get into Secure Shell and try to get down to the directory i want it allows me to do so by doing cd and then the name of the directory I want to get into. But for some reason i cannot do so in reverse lately: ie. once I’m let’s say in Chp6 in webapps it doesn’t allow me back to change into webapps or any of the other directories above the stream. I tried to backtrack directory by directory but it doesn’t work. So the only thing I’m left to do is exit and re-login. The errors I get are always

cd: webapps: No such file or directory
which of course doesn’t make any sense since i see it in jEdit and they’re not typos either. Any suggestions or reasons for why this is happening?

Screen shots

Topics:

I came up on this new idea of doing screenshots (granted it should’ve dawned on me much earlier). I figured it would be much easier if we could just take a screen shot of the screen we’re getting and paste it in, so that our questions would be much more clear (or problems) and formatted correctly. I tried Ctrl+prt sc but it just won’t input it. Unless there is a URL source, the page can’t be linked to. Any ideas or ways we could change it and improve our experience?

The brain is still smarter than the computer

Topics:

As I was repracticing some commands in oracle I noticed that you can’t uniquely identify several aggregate functions in one command (ie. identify by customer_name, sum(credit_limit), ave(credit_limit) and so on even when you try to split up each command on a unique line with customer_name repeated each time). So it’s best to do these individually by either retyping the command (if short) in oracle or saving it in jEdit and then augmenting it to get new info. By the way can we link somehow to jEdit files or Oracle since they’re not webbased? All the sql assignments are found in the sql book and chapter covered are found here.

JEdit delete files M.I.A.

Topics:

Is there any way to delete files in JEdit? I like to keep folders clear and would like to delete some files that I’ve created so I don’t get confused. For some reason it’s not an option while it is in many programs. Is there a reason for not doing that or have I simply not located a way to do it?

Stuffy nose doesn’t help

Topics:

So I’ve tried to catch up with my reading though I’m fighting a nasty cold and really feel like snoozing (hot cocoa would really help right now). On page 7 of section 3 in our ER reading just above problem 6 there is a paragraph that I don’t understand. Mainly what is the main difference between entity and entity type. Here’s what I mean:

Realize that this is a different distinction than that between entity types and entities. In this example, BIT320 is one specific instance of the entity type Course and section 2 of BIT320 in Winter 1962 is one specific instance of the entity type Section. Thus, both are entities and neither one is an entity type.” (can also find this here).

Can someone explain? I’m sorry I’ve had too much NyQuil and everything sounds foreign to me.

Interface

Topics:

I really like this remark by Aga:

I was wondering whether there’s a script and how complicated it would be to equalize topics across the board. It would function in this way: if someone put classquestions as a tag it would also come into the category classquestion and other ones we would like to link it to/connect it with.

It is feasible right now to make this kind of interface, but it would require some work. Basically, I think you need a list of tags you have generated and the tags the group has generated. You could just pick from them. It would take some experimentation to get right.

Beta Beta Bet on Yourself

Topics:

I thought I would try and connect two threads of thought here.

Recently, Pink Footsie was wondering out loud about what Beta Version means. Matt provided a great answer and other avenues for more information. However Matt went onto complain about in another post about how Word Press hates him and thwarted him in his login. And I have to say, it probably hates all of us. No offense.

Because this blog is a test version. I’m not clear on what version it is, beta, alpha….so on. But it still has bugs and problems. Which I think are compounded because we aren’t sure what everything is.

Just the other day I finally figured out what “Write Page” was and then went editing crazy. Not only that, when curiousity gets the better of you and you click on things you aren’t suppose to, since it is a test version its not quiet clear on how to get back to were you started. I clicked on a presentation theme option and next thing I knew, my blog didn’t make sense anymore.

But even though there are theme, login, adding categories, not quite sure what that is problems, its still kind of phun to test beta…or whatever versions before everyone else. Right…..riiiiiiiight? ;)

All those Greek letters

Topics:

We keep mentioning Beta, Beta scripts and programming. I must say I’m a little lost on what all of that means and how is that different from anything else. I guess, come the weekend since I seem overextended during the week once again, I’ll have to do a little research. In the meantime, if any of you experts out there would like to help with my education a bit, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks guys (and gals, of course). Matt maybe you know something about this since you wrote a little about it in one your posts.

Who wants to play tag

Topics:

On this whole subject of topics and tags in class today. I was thinking, though I’m not html and coding smart, I was wondering whether there’s a script and how complicated it would be to equalize topics across the board. It would function in this way: if someone put classquestions as a tag it would also come into the category classquestion and other ones we would like to link it to/connect it with. I realize that every time someone created a category that related to something else, the script would have to be updated so I’m not sure if this would be a viable solution or really helpful. Moreover, I’m not even sure if I’m making this process up. Sounds kind of cool though. It all started here.

Del.icio.us curiosity

Topics:

I was bookmarking like a fiend for del.icio.us and saw that some strangers like my bookmarks. How are they finding out what I bookmark (technorati, del.icio.us, something else?) and what is it that they’re using it for? I feel like my universe is being infiltrated. I’m kind of curious what secret world is going on out there…

Whole lotta posting going on

Topics:

A lot of different themes in the class. Let me hit one of the major ones. Head on, Zee124 notes:

For some reason, I was fascinated by the topic of databases. It may have been the overlapping themes in marketing and bit which got me interested in them. I just hope that I am able to keep up with what I learn this semester and am able to apply it once I graduate.

I think PinkFootsie has a similar concern, and jb mentioned it in her first blog post. It’s a combination of “Gee, there’s a lot of topics here,” and “Am I actually going to be able to use this stuff?”

Well, I can sympathize. We’re doing a lot of new things right now. However, let me offer the following reassurance. On Thursday, tomorrow, as we dig into Normalization, you should start to see the applications. We’ll look more in detail at 1NF; it’s one of the more valuable steps. It’s where you clean the data and understand what it is all about.

Next, remember that in two weeks, the Senior VP of Marketing for Denali Flavors will be coming. He is coming because this is an applied class, and he is interested in what we are doing.

Taking the big plunge

Topics:

jbartko makes some interesting observations:

Seven days ago, I had absolutely no answers to the above questions. Today, I can give you a vague response to most of them. But I still feel as though I have a lot to learn this semester. I don’t usually find myself so lost on terminology during the first week of class. I have never claimed to be an expert on the Internet, but I definitely never realized how much there is about it that I have never even heard of.

Hang in there, Jenny, the class is about exploring new topics. You get points for making blog posts like this one where you lay out the issues as you see them and start to try to address them.

BIT 320: new material

Topics:

What is remixing? What is a mash-up? What does it mean to trackback and what purpose does it serve? And, finally, what does the word delicious have to do with bookmarking?

The upside is this: I enjoy technology and I love learning what else I can do with my PC. I’m looking forward to how much more I’ll know at the end of this semester. Take a look at what topics I’ll be exploring on the BIT 320 Syllabus.

class remixing begins

Topics:

Today we created blog accounts and this is our very first post. We also created del.icio.us accounts. Soon we’ll be blogging and bookmarking on a weekly - sometimes daily - basis.

You can read how to do this here.
