the apple media center

Apple is releasing the new iMac G5, as discussed in this article. The computer turns into a media center when you use FrontRow software. When FrontRow is launched, it looks kind of like a big DVD menu. Your remote control is all you need to operate FrontRow. You can choose to play a DVD, play music, watch a video or look at photos. It can’t play TV. It can, however, play podcasts of TV that you have already downloaded. But, you can’t download using FrontRow. So, if you decide you want to watch something that you don’t have, you have to get up and use the keyboard and mouse.

Maybe it’s just me, but I just can’t picture an iMac in my living room. Why not just put a TV in your living room? It can do pretty much the same thing. And it can actually play TV. And then I could keep my computer someplace more sensible, like in my office. In my opinion, the only really great place for this thing is in a college dormroom or someplace like that. When everything you own is in one room, it makes sense to combine the computer and the media center.

Remote Control for the new iMac

Topics:

I was reading an article about the new video iPod on msnbc. The author, Gary Krakow, wasn’t too impressed by the video iPod. I’m not too excited about it, either, but that’s not my point. He said that the most exciting thing about the video iPod is the fact that Apple is adding a remote control to the new iMac:

Which brings me to what I think was Apple’s more interesting announcement: The new iMac comes with a remote control — and the ability to let you control what you’re listening or watching to from across the room. I think that’s the next step for home computers.
I don’t know about anyone else, but my HP - which I bought less than a year ago - came with a remote. Is the remote really the next step for home computers??
