Wired News: The Firefox Hacks You Must Have

Topics:

With the release of the new version 1.5 of Firefox, there's never been a better time to download the open-source browser, take it for a drive, kick the tires and see what it can do.

FireFox Fan, but not yet ready for 1.5

Topics:

I agree with JB, FireFox is definitely one of my favorite discoveries of 2005 (Sorry Kevin and Aga). As JB points out it is important to remember that although they are working out a few bugs:

Don’t worry fellow fans - the security threat is low and doesn’t open up systems to bigger attacks. The file can be removed and there are ways of dealing with this issue, published by both Mozilla and other sources.

I was temped to download the new version, however, I think the last thing I need this week is computer problems so I think I will wait till break to upgrade.  In addition to plug-in problems that I blogged about earlier this week, I sometimes have a problem viewing PDF files. On my computer I have the full version of adobe acrobat 6.0, and I think Firefox actually works better with the free acrobat reader as opposed to the full version.  If I were Adobe I would want it to be the other way around!  In any event, I don’t think I’ll use IE if I can help it. If you are still unsold on FireFox check this it out: This article discuss some of the benefits of FireFox. It is older, but filled with good basic benefits of the browser.

A problem with Firefox? (Gasp!)

Topics:

I’m not too happy about this, either. Firefox is among my top five favorite new things of 2005. (I know, it’s older than that, but I was a little late.) Anyway, we’ve been blogging about Firefox plug-in issues while using computers at the Bschool. With Firefox on the brain, I came across this brief article about the new version 1.5. It seems that Firefox is susceptible to a certain type of history file contained on bad websites. The file causes Firefox to freeze up upon start until the file is deleted.

Don’t worry fellow fans - the security threat is low and doesn’t open up systems to bigger attacks. The file can be removed and there are ways of dealing with this issue, published by both Mozilla and other sources.

Does anyone have 1.5 yet? It’s only a few days old, right?

Plugged In Here, Plugged Out There

Topics:

Shady and SuperMatt have been talking about firefox plug-ins or the lack-there-of on the B-School computers. Yeah, I agree. This is really annoying, especially because I can’t stand using IE anymore.

However, I do understand the reason for the lack of plug-ins. Shady mentioned that:

“Bud talked about how the business school freezes programs on their computers because the more you mess with them makes all sorts of complications”

The type of missing plug-ins I run into the most while on the b-school computers are things like flash and active-x content While flash is relatively secure, I do know that active-x controls have the possibility to include nasty little viruses and what not. So I can understand b-school IT not wanting to deal with things like this.

wonder why this isn’t a standard practice around U of M. I know for a fact that the computers in the fishbowl (specifically the Macs) are slated for “full use”. Meaning any plug-ins can be installed. They even are open enough to the point where you can install programs. These computers are administered by ITCS. So it seems like ITCS has made the choice of having more open and easy-to-use yet more difficult to maintain. I personally like the ITCS approach better. Maybe with the advent of new OSes and programs we can increase security without sacrificing useability.

Plug-in Problem Continued

Topics:

Shady Waters recently mentions having problems with FireFox plug-ins wondering:

Does anyone else find that the Firefox in the Bschool always needs plug ins to run certain sites? What are the plug ins for and why aren’t they already installed? I run the sites on my computer back and how and I never have problems?

problem all the time, it seems that whenever there is more than basic content in WebPages FireFox needs some sort of plug-in to make the page function. This often requires me to load the plug in and then restart FireFox or refresh the pages. All of this is a pain especially if I am in a hurry - I know that Kevin and Aga would suggest I just stick with IE. I think that FireFox users would be best served if when installing the FireFox browser we had the option to install many if not all of the available FireFox plug-ins. If this is not possible is does anyone know of a website that exists where I can download many of the common ones, to save myself grief? Normally FireFox is the most convenient and best internet explore, however in this regard there is room for improvement.

Many people like FireFox

Topics:

Many people like FireFox, about 100 million. Firefox celebrated its 100 millionth download this Wednesday. I know earlier this year we blogged about FireFox vs IE. This made me think about the antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft. In the lawsuit it was alleged that no other web browser could compete against IE, if it was given with Windows. However FireFox proves that a superior product will get recognized. Inspite of the fact that most of these 100 million people already have IE on their computer.

SuperMatt is #1 2

Topics:

After reading Kevin’s #1 blog I thought I’d check the Google-ability of my blog. I was happy to find out that when I searched “SuperMatt” on Google my blog was the first to populate. Unlike Kevin, I have decided not to use my real name in the blog so if I Google my name nothing related to my blog appears. I don’t think any harm can come out of having my name attached to my blog, but to me better safe than sorry.

Firefox vs IE

Topics:

Mayby it’s b/c I haven’t used it but I’m not to convinced on why I should switch to Firefox. I’m like SuperMatt when he says “If it ain’t broke. don’t fix it.” I noticed the tab element metion here on Tigerly’s Blog, but I also noticed the problems mentioned here on Zee’s blog.  So I don’t know, I guess I’ll check it out this week and maybe just switch up according to which one is the most convenient like Zee. I’ll comment on the transition soon.

If it ain’t broke…

Topics:

As much as I like FireFox, I’m nervous about upgrading to FireFox Beta. Matt already noticed some problems with the Beta version. My recently adopted philosophy on software is that if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to upgrade the software on my cell phone. Everything was working fine…until I upgraded. The upgrade crashed my phone and I almost lost all of my data on it. After that experience I’m much more conservative about upgrading.

Can’t we all just get along?

Topics:

Another epic (or not so epic) battle with WordPress begins.

So I’ve been using the new Firefox Beta for a while now and am loving it. Everything was going along swell until about 2 days ago, when Firefox Beta and WordPress started fighting. Basically whenever I would go to post, it would erase my whole post when I clicked any of the Save/Publish buttons. Grr. What I don’t understand is that Firefox Betea and WordPress got along well together for about 2 weeks. Oh well…as we all have learned from this class, Beta software has it’s ups AND downs. And even though it can sometimes be frustrating to use, as I’ve stated before, I’ll keep using it. If you are interested though, check out the new Firefox Beta.

Firefox Extensions

Topics:

So like SuperMatt, JB, and TigerLily, I too really like Firefox.  I initally switched to Firefox because of the tabbed browsing.  Also, I like using software that gets updated frequently…unlike IE6 which hasn’t been updated, besides a ridiculous number of security patches, since the release of Windows XP.

Until this class I really didn’t use the “extensions” feature of Firefox.

“Extensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to your Mozilla program. They can add anything from a toolbar button to a completely new feature.”

The extension I found most useful for this class so far has been the del.icio.us extension.  Now whenever I find a page I want to bookmark, I just click the “Post to del.icio.us” button on the top of my browser and I’m taken to the posting page.  Check out all the different Firefox extensions p>

Firefox

Topics:

I was pretty excited about Firefox when I started. I liked the tabs, but I’m more of a keyboard person. I couldn’t figure out how to switch between tabs through a keyboard shortcut.. Does anyone know how to do that? Also, sometimes Firefox gives up on loading pages. It just gives blank screens. Also, when i add an attachment through gmail which is large, Firefox takes FOREVER to send it! I literally left it over night and it still didn’t work. IE has a lot of issues too, but there’s certain things I like to do on IE. I guess I’ll be switching between both browsers.

FireFox is Better

Topics:

I completely agree with JB’s Blog What I Like about FireFox. I started using FireFox over IE because I could do Tabbed Browsing, however my favorite add-in are my GMAIL extension which automatically pops up to tell me I have a new mail message and my weather extension which will tell me current weather stats like Weatherbug, but without that ads/spy ware.

What I Like About Firefox

Topics:

I’ve always been an Internet Explorer user, until I started BIT320 this semester. The blogging/bookmarking that we do in this class works better on Firefox, so I started using it. Now, I won’t touch IE unless I have to. Firefox has so many better features. And I keep discovering more. For example, tonight I’m trying to do some market research for another class. I’m using the ‘find’ feature a lot to find what I’m looking for. ‘Find’ on Firefox is amazing. You begin typing what you’re looking for, and as you’re typing Firefox will start highlighting those letters in green within the page. As soon as you type one letter that causes no match on the page, your search field turns red. Just another reason I really, really like Firefox.
