The few comments that I got from outsiders about my blogs I really like because they have been about my Opinionslug ways. I have written a commentary on one journalist’s response to Microsoft’s Annual competition called “Don’t be so bitter”. He in turn responded back with:

Yes you are right, it is a choice. And I guess my comments might come off as bitter, but I’m trying to make a point. What the world needs is more entrepreneurs. Did you know that small businesses account for approximately 60% of the U.S. workforce? Growing the world’s ability to produce more wealth is the end result of building entrepreneurs. I believe that Microsoft should help these young technologists build their own companies, not steal their ideas with a bribe.

Another one was in reference to del.icio.us “For” feature and I got some advice:

You may want to have a look at Simpy’s Group functionality for a more robust non-tag-poluting public/private/invite/etc. version of that feature.

And one all the way back talking about Denali website characters. I think this is my favorite part of blogging, the interaction, the people who share and those who don’t your point of view. It’s a true test to knowledge management where people feed off of others’ opinions and thoughts to form an even better end product.

Is nothing sacred?

Topics:

The Grateful Dead, the original proponents of improvistational rock shows and having tapers record the shows for the benefit of all who care to listen, has responded in poor taste to the changing music industry.  As they do not tour and most music sales come from iTunes and paying for top-sound quality shows from their own website, the Grateful Dead forced free sites to take off their concert performances.

Fans became enraged as they felt abandoned by one of the only sacred things left in their lives.  Petitions flew through the internet threatening to boycott the purchase of all Grateful Dead memorabilia.  The Dead rethought the situation and pulled a 180.  They decided to let the sites distribute their concerts for free to fans and all are happy again.  But, this is a sad moment.  When the technological innovation and desire for profits makes a group of individuals that stood for the sharing of free music to stop what they have been doing since the mid 1960’s.  This article describes the situation in further detail.

Going to the bar? Don’t forget your iPod…?

Topics:

This article discusses a new bar trend. People are bringing their iPods to the bar and taking turns sharing their music with the entire crowd. Brian Toro, a Chicago bar-owner says its like letting his customers play DJ.

Even Toro now brings in his music player so he can crank up rock and punk tunes for customers. He’ll also let others play just about anything — “even if it’s country” — as long as the music is upbeat.
So we’ve replaced the Jukebox with the portable music player. What I like about this is that we did not lose the idea of the jukebox. People sometimes complain that new technology leads to the death of great old traditions. But in this case, the tradition is still there, it’s just updated. We’re still choosing music with our friends and singing along with an entire bar full of people… we’re just spinning the wheel of an iPod rather than inserting a quarter into a jukebox.

Who’s not shady about their music?

Topics:

Hello! I got a reply to my post earlier about proprietary music encoding by matt, saying:

Personally I think iTunes Fair Play scheme is one of the best and isn’t really that restricting. Though I still refuse to by whole albums from them…so maybe I’m not as trusting as I think I am. Yeah, life’s about options. But what happens when none of them are that great?

And yeah….maybe the options have better qualities and it’s legal, but the fact that they set those types of restrictions seems like a bad business model run wild. The online stores should not view cd sales and stores as their comeptitors, but the other download programs that are not so legal…..but who’s can really kill someone’s delusion ;)

Shady (Musical) Waters

Topics:

Recently Shady Waters talked about digital rights management (DRM) in regards to music. And she concluded that:

“It’s such a proprietary approach and totally understandable why legal downloads are such a small portion of the market. who would want to when you have such better options. That’s what life is about: Options.”

And I think that’s the problem…too many options. Stores like iTunes, do allow the artist to get paid. Though I had heard that they receive very little from album sales anyway (digital and CD alike). Though you can often find a wider range of material on the less legal sites. Stores like iTunes guarantee song quality and information. The other side doesn’t. But iTunes restricts your use through DRM like Fair Play. The other side has no restriction.

Personally I think iTunes Fair Play scheme is one of the best and isn’t really that restricting. Though I still refuse to by whole albums from them…so maybe I’m not as trusting as I think I am. Yeah, life’s about options. But what happens when none of them are that great?

Restriction Will Robison Restriction

Topics:

So I ran across this article in Business Week, The Music Mess. It’s old yes I know, almost a year, but it pertains to a lot of what we having been talking about regarding music, downloading and all those wonderful debates regarding mp3 players. The article is here.

This is a little different then Jb and Matt’s discussion regarding restriced cds. JB said:

We PAID for the music, so we should be able to put it on a computer, right? We should be able to play it on an MP3 player, right? Turns out, no. We tried 3 times and every time the ripped songs skipped. The CD, however, plays fine.

The issue that I’m looking further into is the fact that now for those who do download legally through things like itunes, winamp, or napster. The most problematic is when you download the way that the song has been encoded, restricts it. For example, if downloading from itunes, the technology restricts how and where you can play it.

It’s such a proprietary approach and totally understandable why legal downloads are such a small portion of the market. who would want to when you have such better options. That’s what life is about: Options.

Bit of Torrent Attack

Topics:

Bud happened to post a del.icio.us link to an attack on Bit Torrent. The corporations are running as peers in the systems and sending chunks of garbage instead of the actual file. For those who don’t know, Bit Torrent is a little simpler than a regular file sharing such as Kazaa, napster, or DC++, in that it just connects you directly to other computers to share the file instead of running it through a middle man or server. It also runs better the more people who are sharing the file itself, called seeding. No one person or computer “hosts” the file, but instead puts their file up for sharing and downloading The longer, more you share the fast your own download goes. It does this by swarming…I think is the correct term, because a majority of your bandwidth is unused which is a waste, so BT just takes over the extra stuff. That’s the best way I can describe it, I might be wrong but its my type of lay terms ;) correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m particularly upset about this recent info about people funding garbage. The whole point of BT is that you can share things easily and it encourages sharing. This is similar to when record companies started getting on Kazaas and others and sharing songs with blanks in it to deter people. Do they really really think that this will deter people? NO…they will still search. I doubt this is the real solution and could be spending so much more time just actually making downloading more legalized. It’s not going away, now or never, live with it!

To further this sharing, here are some links of bit torrent programs: official bit torrent page, ABC torrent (I use this), Azureus, Bit Tornado. You just download this little program, and then search the internet for file links of bit torrent, click, save on your computer through the program and you’re downloading. The only downside is that if no one is sharing or seeding…there’s a likelyhood that you won’t get your file.

I do try not to download US stuff…just to be on the safe side, but I use BT mainly for manga so… ;)

Will the Apple bubble burst?

Topics:

I had an interesting conversation with a friend about Apple’s apparent iPod “bubble.” Then I did some looking around and found this article, among others. I know that a lot of people, like the author of this article, believe that the iPod is a trap. It supposedly locks you into iTunes, iMusic, and anything you can burn into iTunes from CDs. I also know that there are loopholes to this - with the right amount of burning/ripping steps, you can get most songs onto your iPod. However, it’s not easy. And you can only use iTunes software with your iPod, and iTunes is not as nice as other software in terms of the library and other features. So, here is my proposition: Apple created what seemed to be a wonderful bubble when it (seemingly) limited its iPod customers to its own music store and software. But now, the bubble might burst. People are getting frusterated with the limitations. Similar MP3 players are on the market which allow you to get music from any store, AND you don’t have to use iTunes software. So what seemed like a monopoly-like situation is going to backfire when people switch over to non-iPod MP3 players. Didn’t Apple experience something similar when the Mac proved too incompatible to compete with the PC?

Copy Protection

Topics:

In a recent post by Jennie, she mentioned that she had run into some consumer level copy-protection on the new David Gray album. I too just recently purchased the album, but had no problem ripping it to my home computer as well as transfering it to my iPod. However, it is entirely possible for Jennie’s CD to be encrypted and mine not to be.

Back in the days of Napster, record companies tried implementing some early forms of cd copy protection with interesting and/or annoying effects. For example, some of the CDs would not play in normal CD players or you could crack the copy protection by just tracing a permanent marker along the outside of the CD. Now, they are again trying to implement copy protection on some new releases. However, they have to be extremely careful to avoid consumer backlash to having their CDs protected. Therefore, some record companies have employed various techniques to test the consumer waters, such as releasing batchs of CDs with some having copy protection and others without. Do they really think we as consumers are naive enough to not notice this? This is a big debate in the digital age. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

More on illegal music

Topics:

For those of us who still obtain our music collection illegally, we are familiar with this common Kazaa, Limewire, etc experience: You download your song, you preview it, it plays for 15 seconds and then makes that really loud and painful static noise. Someone doesn’t want that song out on the internet. But what I experienced the other day was something entirely new to me: I got the new David Gray album (legally, yes) and brought it to my friend who wanted to rip it. Usually there is no problem with this. We PAID for the music, so we should be able to put it on a computer, right? We should be able to play it on an MP3 player, right? Turns out, no. We tried 3 times and every time the ripped songs skipped. The CD, however, plays fine. EXCEPT: if you play the CD on MusicMatch, it skips. But if you play it on the software that comes with the CD, it’s fine. Has anyone ever had this problem? Can an artist prevent you from ripping? Are they finally getting to the core of the illegal download problem? If you can’t put it on your computer, you certainly can’t share it. Or did I buy a faulty CD…?

Start your Zoom Zoom *Engine* with a USB

Topics:

Both Supriya and Pink Footsie have been looking into this interesting concept of plugging in an USB mp3 in to a car and playing music. While as Pink Footsie has said it’s not a really new concept, just not one that has picked up, the way that Mazda has decided to use their USB is.

On Everythingusb.com, they happen to have a short article on how Mazda uses the USB flash drives to, most interestingly:start the engine. It also does the usualy mundane things like *yaawn* transfer directions, and of course play songs of your choice.

The pictures look sweet and I can’t wait for mine. But I do wonder about the secruity of the USB starting your engine. People could just copy it to theirs and hop in your car. Life’s hard.

Musical Merry-go-Round

Topics:

Jb happened to be comparing the sony and the ipod, saying that:

A lot of people really love the iPod, but I guess I don’t see what makes it better than what Sony has to offer.

And I have to say that, I agree that the iPod really isn’t that superb. I happen to own an iPod, how I got it is a long story, but needless to say that it really isn’t all that its cracked up to be. Especially if you are in any sort of way tech saavy and an internet illegal in aquiring songs.

I really can’t say for any of the other mp3 players, but the first issue is the techonology that iPod requires, iTunes. The only way to get songs on there to play is through this program. When you do insert the songs in, you lose all folder structure that you already had on your computer. It sorts your songs, not by how you have already grouped them, but by the titles, artist, albumns, etc that you have filled in with the song.

And here comes the next problem, if you happen to “find” songs on the internet, most of these data spaces are unfilled and unmarked. What makes it worse is if you have songs in other languages, languages that iPod doesn’t recognize. Oh the horror, your songs become lost within the huge abyss of the iPod, to be scrolled by on ever pass, because you’re not sure what its labled and iPod sure as hell doesn’t.

However, I don’t know if sony really is the next best deal. Some other possible ones that look promising are iRiver, specifically the their H10 series especially if their storage goes up soon. Or things by Creative, things like the Nomad Jukebox Zen. Which has a cool 60gb option. sweet.

That’s my two cents

Sony better than iPod?

Topics:

In response to bookmarks here.

I noticed a couple bookmarks on the Community Engine related to iPods. I never caught on to the craze; I’m pretty loyal to non-Apple brands, especially Sony. My friend just got this new Sony MP3 Player. The 60GB iPod stores up to 15,000 songs. This Sony stores 13,000. It also costs $120 less than the iPod and has a considerably longer battery life (40 hours compared to about 5 for the iPod, or 15 if you don’t use the slideshow). The Sony is also a little smaller than the iPod, weighs a little less, and has a really cool bi-directional display feature. A lot of people really love the iPod, but I guess I don’t see what makes it better than what Sony has to offer.
