CNN Pipeline

Topics:

CNN now offers a new service, called CNN Pipeline, in which they broadcast multiple simultaneous feeds of live news stories.  The user can choose between different stories at the same time.  This service costs $2.95 a month or $24.95 per year.

Today, for example an someone could have used it to watch the 9/11 Commision or the Saddam trial.  This is a good service to have once you start working full time for a living, as you want to know whats happening, but can’t get to a tv.

When Hate and News don’t Mix

Topics:

Building off my entry two posts ago about the growing lethargy of The Media and the internets response to the demand for accurate and truthful infomration in a timely matter, I have come across a very good example that hits close to home on the University of Michigan.

Last Thursday on the 15th of September. An asian couple was walking down S. Forrest when they were urinated on and then acosted with racial slurs. The article was printed in the Michigan Daily almost a week later on Wednesday the 21st.

The Ann Arbor News Police Beat, Clickondetroit.com, Yahoo!News all had this news article on their presses and displayed BEFORE monday the 19th. The fact that many students, faculty, and administration had to find out this news from an outside source is amazing and appalling. What real purpose do newspapers serve if they do not provide the news quickly and accuratly. Does that mean that they will dissapear as news on the web becomes more prevelant.

On top of the sad lack of speed from the michigan daily newspaper. There is now the issue of coordinating the efforts of all the students: graduate and undergraduates, administration and APIA faculty. How to keep everyone informed and on top of the story, and what everyone else is doing. Past just sitting down and talking which is in the works for monday the 26th is also this blog put together by one of the students invovled. It contains all the information that has been sent via email, the open letters that have been sent from faculty to administration, the petition that is being signed by students, meetings that are upcoming and responses from numerous areas of the campus.

Stop the Hate.

Journalizm Web

Topics:

In the recent history of New Reporting, there have been issues of reporting fairing and accuratly. Not only that, just reporting the news to the masses is a major issue. Many times these days, The Media does not cover certain articles due to their very contraversial nature or the issues assumed to be lacking in interesting headlines. An example is the Downing Street Memo that occured back in June which new services all over America failed to highlight or even pick up.

To combate this growing lack of news in our New Sources, many online have started to respond with the internet, particularly with blogs. To share news, there has been a growing web underneath the surface of connections that has formed as people become strive to report and keep up to what is really happening in Iraq, London, and Washington DC. One such blog is Press Think, who won the Reports without Borders in the America section.

There are a huge amount of options to find out news on things that one would never hear about from The Media. For instance, after the London Subway bombings, the response on Muslim blogs were overwhelming.

But even as I and we in class exclaim over this growing wonder, one has to figure out how to find these things and that is a major problem. The web is slowly growing into a huge mass and inefficient as it is with tons of information out there but very little to categorize it or find without hard work and hard effort. Are you ready?
