oh Matchmaker, oh make me a sibling

Topics:

I ran across a really interesting article at the Nytimes.com regarding children of sperm donors and their quest for finding their half-siblings. They are connecting through sites that allow them to insert their contact information, sperm donor number and sperm bank number. Such sites as Donor Sibling Registry.com. Mothers of children are talking with other mothers and older children are connecting with their sisters, brothers, and so on.

When I hear about these kinds of stories I am always amazed by the power of the internet and how it is able to connect people from all over the world easily, crossing things that even sometimes humans have a hard time doing. I think that’s why I love looking at pictures from different parts of the world because you can.

These children are able to find some sort of connection, if they want to. It also makes me think of the high number of children that are currently being adopted from a huge number of asian countries. They will be offered a better life but at the same time, they might feel like they are missing something and want to search back. And who knows, maybe one day they will be able to do the same thing?

Sidenote: I know its a bit different because there are more anounomity issues around real adoption. But doesn’t everyone have the right to know who and where they come from, doesn’t that just add another facet to who you are in the end?

Ho Ho Ho How to Search?

Topics:

So in class on thrusday we happend to cover how search engines search. Or we hypothosized. I happen to be reading a NY Times article about an alternative, when the algorithums, keywords, relevance, links, and arrows fail you.

One such solution is Google Answers, answering questions for people who have been let down by wonderful search engines that we use. Any sort of questions, doesn’t matter. You ask the questions, set the price you are willing to pay, $200 max, and wait for a willing expert to skim through the questions and select yours from the pot. The experts get a 75% commission for answering, researching, or find some sort of solution to your horribly difficult question.

Another option is Ingenio.com, where instead of asking questions. You pick a expert and send a query and await a call back. Each expert has per minute call rates and they will spend as much time as you need, and just charge you in the end.

And finally for the frugal, Wondir.com, is a no charge site, where anyone can respond, but people who answer can get tipped if they provide well and not only that they are able to enter contests to win cool things, like…tote bags…my personal favorite.

So here we have it. People trying to move past search engines and instead of organizing the web, we now just pay others to search through the mass for us. As always, remember to tip well.

Google's Big Problem, or Google vs the Social

Topics:

Google search is algorithmic, meaning no explicit editors. However, Google's use of links to determine relevance means there are many implicit editors. I wonder if the novelty problem the author mentions is not due to freshness, a real google problem.

start.com and our remix

Topics:

JB asks the question:

He said that when he includes links to our re-mix on his interactive homepages, it increases the likelihood of our site showing up in searches like Google. Why? I don’t know a lot about how to make your site show up in a search. I thought I understood that the more your site is visited, the more likely it is to show up in Google. But what does a link on Start.com have to do with this?

The simple, intuitive answer is that the more things pointing to you, the easier you are to find.

A more complex answer states that two key search engine criteria are relevance and coverage. Relevance is determined by semantic analysis of your content (i.e., analysis of your content for meaning) and whether other sites deemed to be relevant link to you. Therefore, links from other sites help.

Coverage is how much of the relevant stuff the search engine has in its index. As regards coverage, consider the problem faced by search engines. There are over 11 billion web pages and over 17 million blogs. How does the search engine know when there is a good new one. One way is for people to start linking in either their online feedreaders or on their web pages.

I provide a case study of this with a class we ran over the summer here.
