Blacken your Soul with Consumerism

Topics:

Supermatt talked about Black Friday and reasons why it was called black. I thought I would add another rumor to the rumor mill. I heard that black friday is black friday, because that is when all the stores begin to work their way back into the black in terms of their books.

But I’ve never heard of Cyber Monday. Perhaps I will have to join ;)

Black Friday / Cyber Monday

Topics:

I have heard a few definition of why today (the Friday after Thanksgiving) is called “Black Friday”. This website I found is helpful. Basically there are a few reasons behind the name.

  1. The “black” in the name is a spoof of the term “black tuesday” of the 1929 stock market crash. Retail employess nicknamed the day this way because of how frightening and exhausting the day is. Most retailers will open very early.
  2. From the years when ledgers were kept by hand, in pen: referring to the black ink used to designate operating profits. This was supposed to be the day when retailers finally posted an operating profit for the year.

It is also interesting to learn that although Black Friday has the most customer traffic per year the most volumn per year is typically sold on the Saturday before Christmas or Christmas Eve. This link also discusses Cyber Monday.

Playing your Cards close to your Holiday Chest

Topics:

As we slowly draw closer to Thanksgiving…the day of reckoning comes even closer. The stores have already given in to the inevitable. Yet I resist the urg to buy stuff even as it is over two weeks before Thanksgiving and yet, the stores are playing xmas music and the items on the shelves are scattered with red, green and white.

But for those that are ready to shop and looking for those deals, the wonder of the internet is here to assist! Black Friday 2005, provides scans and coupons of all the major deals for this upcoming black friday. There are many other sites also

But many companies are upset and saying that many of these sites are jepordizing their business. I really can’t see how… The consumers are becoming educated on what’s out there and then they might come to your store if you have good deals right? dear me. Some people just can’t play the market
