Silicon Optix solves problem with HDTV

Topics:

In the current edition (Dec. 12th) of Time Magazine, there is an extremely interesting section on tech pioneers.  It has 1-2 column articles about different companies that are coming out with cutting edge technologies, services, and products.  I highly recommend reading it.

One of the businesses featured is called Silicon Optix.  It has developed an “advanced video-processing chip, the Realta chip, that enables real-time pixel-by-pixel processing of HDTV, delivering Hollywood-quality video to consumers at a fraction of the cost.”

Currently, if you most channels only transmit their content in standard definition format, no in HD quality.  This chip converts the signal into HD on your TV so you get the HD quality for channels that don’t transmit in HD.  This makes purchasing an HDTV much more valuable to a consumer.

Video iPod Causes Controversy In Hollywood

Topics:

Now that newest versions of the iPod allow tv shows or movies to be shown, the question arises as to who gets paid for the use of the content.  ABC just made a deal with iPod to sell their shows, such as “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives”, to view the day after their release on TV.  It costs $1.99 per episode, so the Actors Guild, Director’s Guild, and Writer’s Guild contacted ABC to argue for and ensure fair payment, since ABC did not contact them about the deal.

This shows how new forms of technology change already established industry’s.  As the music industry has already changed, with most of its revenues coming from downloads and ringtones, now the TV industry is starting to experience changes.  It is essential that the guilds garner fair payment deals, otherwise networks will be able to get an unfair portion of sales.  It will also be interesting to see how the ABC deal will affect the deals signed by other networks.  To view the article that discusses these matters, check this out.
