Yahoo thinks Del.icio.us is…..well…delicious

Topics:

Yahoo the internet giant recently purchased Del.icio.us for an undisclosed amount of money this Friday. Similar to Yahoo’s recent acquisitions of Flickr, and Upcoming.org Yahoo is trying to generate more mass appeal and the sharing of knowledge and information. This article from Wired News explains the reasoning behind the purchase

During the past year, Yahoo has been adding more tools that promote sharing among friends and family as it battles for web traffic with its biggest rivals — Google, Microsofts MSN and Time Warner’s AOL. All of them are trying to widen their internet audiences so they can make more money from steadily increasing volume of online advertising.

Each of us are in fact 1 of 300,000 current users of Del.icio.us, and I’m sure we will see much growth now that it is part of the Yahoo network. I really hope this takes off. I know that there are so many times, that I wanted to pass a link of to my friends, and if this gain more appeal it would really help me share links. Unfortunately for the owner of Del.icio.us the transaction was “so small that it won’t impact Yahoo’s financials”.

Today’s Top Brands: What the future will bring.

Topics:

This article on Forbes.com identifies several of today’s top brands with the most opportunity for growth. Consumers have suggested specific areas for that growth. For example, consumers want to see Apple move into cell phones, car stereos and televisions. They want a dating network from eBay.

I thought this article was especially interesting in light of all the Corporate Strategy I’ve been studying this week. Sooner or later, firms are faced with opportunities to expand, and they must choose how. This article seems to be in favor of horizontal integration into other industries and product categories. I think the suggestions for Apple make sense. Apple has a reputation for media products and user-friendliness, both very important for things like cell phones and televisions. However, I don’t exactly agree with some of the suggestions for Yahoo: clothing and coffee houses. Yahoo is a tech company. Will it really be so desparate as to start selling its brand on clothing and coffee? I hope not. A company like Yahoo has capabilities in technology and should leverage them in other technology industries. Clothing and coffee may destory the Yahoo brand image and hurt the existing tech businesses.

The article is fun - it gets you thinking about the future. What do you want out of today’s brands in 10 years?

MyWeb by Yahoo

Topics:

There is a commentary piece on Forbes.com called “A Better Way to Search” which discusses Yahoo’s new search tactic called MyWeb. How it works is as follows:

First, the idea behind MyWeb (now in beta version) is to create your own personal Web universe with the center being your own page, which includes all of the Web pages and links you’ve downloaded and stored there–basically, a snazzier set of bookmarks. In turn, these pages are searchable whenever you like.

These “search communities” are suppose to be Yahoo’s way of taking over Google, but isn’t this exactly like del.icio.us? Whats the difference? At the same time, I question whether people are actually going through other people’s bookmarks. Since I’ve been using del.icio.us, I haven’t really been looking at other people’s bookmarks. I just bookmark my own and don’t really try to find people who I have bookmarks in common with. But this is a personal thought. Del.icio.us is stil up and running and many people are interacting on it so there must be some appeal to it. If that’s the case, Yahoo is making a good move and this project will probably become popular just because Yahoo is a well known name.
