Steve Rubel is spreading his meme in del.icio.us
Steve Rubel has done a brilliant job of making sharing itself into the self-interested activity people seem to need to contribute to folksonomy. Everyone who doubted you could use del.icio.us to spread your meme should look at what Steve is doing.

Recall this post about using del.icio.us to spread your meme that Steve Rubel was so kind to just pick up and publicize about a month ago. Well, Steve has become a practitioner. He is asking people to indicate their desire to have him link to their blogs by posting the link under the del.icio.us tag “micropersuasion”.
Basically, he is giving us an education in what micropersuasion is by getting us to figure out what fits and tagging that. He is also getting us to spread his meme in the bargain by enlisting all of the people trying to get mentioned on his page to tag items with his tag. Many people tagging is efficient, and it doesn't all look like Steve saying, “Hey, look at what I think this thing is”. He's now got a group of people coming to consensus on what they think “micropersuasion” is, all with Steve's guiding hand.
Of course, the motivation is key, and Steve has understood that well. People want to get mentioned on Steve's blog because that will give them visibility with other high profile bloggers (as well as a small modicum of search engine visibility). As I mentioned a couple of days ago, the consensus I see emerging is that people contribute to folksonomy because it has self-interest value and because they want to share. Steve has managed to make sharing itself the self-interest value. Brilliant!
