How to win friends or at least influence people with blogs
Stroking an influential person's vanity is not the only way to catch their attention. Some even seem to respond most readily to substance.

Last week I introduced xFolk 0.3 into the wild and managed to generate some interesting feedback in other blogs as well as by email. I was hoping to get some implementers to take up the charge and put xFolk into their tools. Here's how Brian Del Vecchio responded to one of my overt influence attempts. I was hoping to gain his attention by taking advantage of his vanity. Here's an indication of how successful that strategy was:
PS, Bud, it was awfully strange reading to the bottom of that article and seeing my name in it. Despite my constant vanity surfing I managed to find and read the article in the context of microformats first. That was spooky...

So, Brian responded first to substance and then to my attempts to stroke his vanity. Hmmm, what does that tell us about the blogosphere?
For this same post, Jonas Luster did manage to catch my attention via my vanity with this quote:
Am I not seeing something, or is the intro to xFolk 0.3 not eating its own dogfood?

Well, Jonas has a point. There are two places where I myself need to implement: (1) In my webcites link blog; (2) Tagging my own posts on this blog. At least these are the easy two. They will require just some simple template changes in my weblog publishing software. Harder will be inserting links with tags into blog posts. That will always take hand coding. I'll see if I can tackle one and two tomorrow or at least by the weekend. I have the high octane blogging boot camp and some presentations to prepare for.
