How to build on bubble-up folksonomies... (plasticbag.org)
A nice practicum on using domain knowledge + user input to create business directed folksonomies. Suggests at the end of the post that knowledge workers are essentially going to become data analysts.

hackdiary: Using Wikipedia and the Yahoo API to give structure to flat lists
A nice explanation of how to link together a bunch of terms using publicly available sources. Those guys at the BBC are doing a lot of great work here. The hack uses wikipedia and the yahoo (REST) API.

Bokardo » Blog Archive » Web2Con: Popularity Decay in Tagging
"The idea of popularity decay illustrates the tension between new ideas and popular ideas. Both are valuable, but not at the expense of the other." I like this idea of tags evolving over time. Not sure about the implementations he cites.

tRuTag
"I've created tRuTag with Ruby because I wanted to explore tagging. What it does is create an html page of your tags on various sites and then allows you to explore them on other sites."

Posting, Subscribing, and Tagging
I think we're only seeing the beginning of a larger explosion in interactivity and that these actions are a just the tip of the iceberg. This is definitely a more digestible hierarchy for understanding how people bahave with content.

Imitation is the surest sign of success
I disagree with Jason Calacanis. IceRocket's adoption of tagging using a format invented by technorati indicates that technorati is achieving wide marketplace acceptance. By my estimates over a million bloggers are using the technorati format.

Jon Udell: More del.icio.us collaborative filtering
But there isn't yet a natural, reliable, or comprehensive way to connect me to interesting developments in tangentially related realms, where interest is determined by a group connected to mine by weak ties.

Collaborative filtering with del.icio.us
There's a recommendation engine lurking in there somewhere, and I've decided to try to flush it out.

Folksonomy makes tag aggregators king of search rankings
Technorati tag aggregation pages are achieving top ten search results for significant, niche terms like podcasting, folksonomy, and blogosphere. Technorati's introduction of the seemingly obscure reltag microformat is at the root of its rise in the search

Mapping del.icio.us with Anthracite and OmniGraffle
He's mapping tag relationships in del.icio.us. It takes a lot of work. Why not map resource tagging.

He talks about what it takes to break the power law distribution. He basically concurs with my thoughts on folksonomy.

Where will the tag sets come from?
Is this just a recreation of technorati and/or trackback. Shelley Winters suggested tagback, and Don Park talked about the idea last fall. It sounds like trying to come up with a central classification scheme.

fac.etio.us
This sort of works. It allows you to view things by tag such as all the people using it etc. It's a step in the right direction. I would like a webservices interface.

i d e a n t: A del.icio.us study
Haven't read the whole study. On a quick skim, the user interface of these systems is attrocious in terms of being aware of others. I'll have more to say about this.

Accidental Smarts a la Mode
An extended discussion on foloksonomy. The big negative is chaos. I would like to see easier ways to determine how resources were tagged.

Tagsurf: Tagged Hyperforum
This is a cross between a blog, a bulletin board, and a social bookmarking system with tags. A key innovation is that tags can be URIs. This somewhat obviates the need to agree on tags or search by tags. Identifying by URLs is more natural.

A Folkonomy of Words (Ross Mayfield)

Introducing: Tagback
A way of supporting conversations on the web. Also a nice way to spread the meme. But others have to catch on and do this by hand, a barrier.

Tag-aware RSS feeds
How to get your tags to appear in your feeds. Now, this functionality has been available for a long time for categories in many blog publishing softwares. This really comes down to a question of categorization and software support for it.

CorporateBloggingBlog: Blog Overkill - And More
The interesting observation that Technorati has over 210K tags. One issue with technorati is that it is self-tagged. How I interpret my message vs. how others receive it.

Many-to-Many: Tagging's power law
The notion of dominant memes in tagging URLs is not so surprising. More interesting is how one reacts to this phenomenon in, for instance, figuring out how to promote new memes (pivotal ideas) in the community.

Finding Gatherers (human tag feeds?)
A good little tool that helps you find who on del.icio.us is linking to things you link to. That provides you a basis to find other resources via the shared interest network. This stuff should be easier. Could this become a paid service?

hackdiary: Stemming tags, and one website to the tune of another
Remarkable. This provides delicious tags for a specific website you are looking at. Is there a way to get all tags for a page? THAT would be interesting.

Folksonomy: The Soylent Green of the 21st Century (Clay Shirky)
Well, as Shirky notes, when others do the work for you, it is much cheaper than doing it yourself. What about SPAM though? That raises the cost. Further, there is a cost to figuring out someone else's tagging system.

Guilt is Good (Ross Mayfield)
He mentions a number of tagging schemes. Right on in his observation that del.icio.us really starts out benefitting the individual. What's unclear to me is how any of these systems make the social aspect apparent.
